12 Steps to kill Giants of Sin and Temptation
Based on 1 Samuel 17 (David and Goliath)
Step 1: Realize that Giants will eventually kill you if you don’t kill them
1 Sam 17:3 And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel on the other side: and there was a valley between them.
Note: Israel on one side and the Philistines (including Goliath the giant) on the other side.
1 Sam 17:22-25 And David ..came and saluted his brethren. 23And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines..24And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid. 25And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up:
Note: Notice that Giants grow. Goliath on day one was on the other side of the mountain. But each day, giants get closer. You must realize that if you don’t face up to your giants, giants will continue to grow up and eventually kill you. By giants, it is meant, giants of temptation and sin problem.
Step 2: Identify who your biggest Giant is
1 Sam 17:26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
Note: Find out who your giant is. You must know and identify your biggest temptation that you are faced with.
Step 3: Have the right attitude toward the giant
1 Sam 17:32 And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
Note: You must have the right attitude toward your giant. You must be willing and decide to fight. If you don’t decide to fight the giant, you have lost the battle.
Step 4: Recall your past victories God has given you
1 Sam 17:33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
Note: How many have felt you can’t fight against a giant? Notice what David does in verse 34-36:
And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: 35And I went out after him, and slew him. 36Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
Note: David goes back to past and recalls the victories that God has given him. David looks back and says there are things in his past that prove God can deliver.
Step 5: Arm yourself
1 Sam 17:39-40 And David girded his sword….And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him. 40And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.
Note: You must arm yourself. How did David overcome this giant? He used 5 stones. When Jesus was on the cross, how many places was Jesus wounded: hands, feet, head, side, broken heart. How many places? 5
What came form those 5 places? Blood. How did David overcome the giant? By the blood of the lamb (Rev 12:11). It is by the blood where by we gain the power and thus we are armed to go and fight giants. No blood, no power.
And what does blood do? It circulates. What was the thing that sustained Jesus when he was on this earth?
“In one way only could such a life be sustained. Jesus lived in dependence upon God and communion with Him” SOP.
It was communion with God that sustained His life. If we are not in continual communion with God, we do not have the blood.
Step 6: Do not be afraid of your giants
1 Sam 17:42-44 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth. 44And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.
Note: Do not be afraid of your giants. 1 John 4:18, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear".. In reality, if you have perfect love for Jesus, that will cast out any kind of fear you will have. Do not fear your giants.
Step 7: Approach giants in the name of Jesus
1 Sam 17:45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
Note: You need to learn to say what you must say to your giants. David said, I am coming to you in the name of Jesus.
Ephesians 4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not...
Until we get spiritually angry with our giants, we cannot fight them.
Step 8: Believe that the Lord will give you victory
1 Sam 17:46 This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hands.
Note: You must believe that the Lord will give you victory.
Step 9: Become constantly eager to get your giants
1 Sam 17:48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
Note: Which direction are you running when you meet challenges? David hasted toward the giant. We must become constantly eager to get ours giants.
Step 10: You must want the head of the giant
1 Sam 17:49-51 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. But there was no sword in the hand of David. 51Therefore David ran, and took his sword, and cut off his head therewith.
Note: It is not enough for you to just wound your giant, it is not enough to throw a stone at your giants, because when he gets up, he is going to be even angrier. You must want the head of your giant.
Step 11: Once you kill your giant, say who is next
1 Samuel 17:51 And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.
Note: Once David killed Goliath, the philistines were watching and they are shocked. But David once he killed Goliath, he looks at the philistines and He is saying, who’s next? When you kill your giant, says who is next? Your demons will flee if you kill your giant.
Step 12: Testify your victory over the giant(s) in church
1 Sam 17:54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem;
Note: Where is Jerusalem? It the church. Stand up and say, I have a testimony. Look, I have the head of this giant. If you be the one to bring the head of your giant and guess what other people will do? They will go after the other heads.
1 Sam 17:52 And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines,
40 Day Accounts = Victory
When did David receive the victory? Goliath came for forty days before being killed by David (1 Sam 17:16). If we look at all the 40 day accounts, there is victory at the end of the 40 days. For instance, Joshua at the end of the 40 days, Pentecost, Jesus fasted for 40 days in the wilderness…Medical science says after 23 days, a habit is changed. If you will give God 40 days of intense commitment and prayer, you will have victory.
